Hardscape Maintenance Tips for Stillwater

A patio, path or landscape wall needs care suited to its material. Concrete pavers, natural stone, brick and poured concrete do not all use the same cleaner, joint material or sealer. Keep the product information from installation so maintenance decisions have a useful starting point.

Inspect Before Cleaning

Walk the area after significant rain and when seasons change. Look for loose units, displaced joint material, uneven edges, standing water, cracks and soil washing away near the surface.

Photograph changes from the same position so you can tell whether movement is continuing. A raised edge or unstable step deserves attention before cosmetic cleaning. A leaning wall, persistent settlement or suspected structural damage needs an appropriate assessment.

Start With Routine Surface Care

Sweep or blow off leaves and grit. Clear drainage openings and remove debris before it forms a wet layer on the surface. For a stain, identify both the stain and the surface before choosing a cleaner.

Test a manufacturer-approved cleaner in an inconspicuous area and follow its directions. Pressure washing can remove joint sand or damage vulnerable finishes; do not treat maximum pressure as the best setting.

Check Joints and Edges

Joint sand, polymeric products, mortar and permeable aggregate serve different systems. Replace lost material with the specified product and preparation method. Adding an incompatible material can create another problem.

Inspect edge restraints and areas where runoff carries material away. Weeds can establish in debris above the joints, so clearing debris and maintaining the joint system are part of follow-up care. No fabric or joint product makes every hardscape permanently weed-free.

Plan Sealing and Winter Care Around the Material

Sealing is a product and condition decision, not an automatic annual task. Check compatibility, surface preparation, moisture conditions and the manufacturer's reapplication guidance before coating.

Use deicers only when appropriate for the surface and as directed by the product and pavement manufacturer. Sweep up residue when practical. Keep drainage routes clear so water does not repeatedly collect and refreeze.

When Maintenance Is Not Enough

Cleaning will not correct a failed base, unsuitable slope or continuing erosion. Note where runoff comes from and where it can discharge. Drainage work may need to be addressed before resetting a repeatedly sinking area.

Do not assume every crack is cosmetic or that patching the surface fixes the cause. Explain when the problem began and whether it changes after rain.
